following a live debut at berghain and standout shows at de school and institut fuer zukunft, daniel martin-mccormick returns as relaxer with the fourth installment in the projects eponymous ep series. jamie lee takes over the a-side harrowing screams are framed by strobing chords and a deadly groove. simultaneously euphoric, agonizing and cathartic, jamie lee was written as the climax of relaxers live set and is a prime example of the artists uniquely feral techno. drawing equally on punk confrontations and more haunting emotional explorations, jamie lee is a lacerating and visceral descent. on the b-side, unwind oozes from the speakers, a miasmic cut that builds on the white knuckle tension of jamie lee. a lone synth figure worms its way through pulsating 3d drones, shimmering dissonances and hiccuping drums, rocking out into a quasi catatonic infinity. finally regime change gently floats on the surface of a trash-filled sea, a fading, smog choked reverie.

optimo trax presents a 4-track ep from germanys mathias schober, head honcho of berlin’s lossless label. as always we prefer to let our artists do the talking. heres what mathias has to say about this release - the idea behind all tracks on the ep was a simple setup of drums and one synth that would do a main sequence/sound, yet theres a lot of detail in all of them. in a certain way features a 808ish beat with a main sequence coming from a tiny monophon synth called atmegatron - 8bit love, it turned out being much more music than i thought it would be when i set everything up. but what rules are made for is the same setup but the sequence is a 101 and so are all the washed out fx synths. on is to break them i went a different route, i had the dub, delayed stabs synth first as i was messin with my moog and a space echo - which btw is used on every single track i release, if you haven’t noticed yet. so i was trying to build something around those stabs in order to fit the track to the others and so i ended up with another sequence coming from my moog. as there was still space on the record, i decided to add an ambient version of is to break them, i love the ambience on this track. i hope that my love for dub sounds is obvious enough on these tracks. happy i found such an excellent home for the ep!

hot on the heels of the first two parts comes part three of hoshs stories from sa talaia series. the series takes tracks from his recently released album of the same name and releases them on his new fryhide label. first up are two collaborations with pig&dan. atlantis is not a fairy tale, a spine tingling tune with shifting melodies above rolling rubber beats. it s emotive and colourful and sets a nice mood to start off. the second brotherhood balearea is deep and elastic, with nice rubber beats and spraying synths bringing some real dynamism to the table. one of those tunes sven väth would drop at those special ibiza after parties. awakening of the birds a collaboration with karmon takes off right there and keeps you in that trance but gets more groovy with its inducing light footed drums, airy hi hats and skyward melodies all zoning you out. last of all, meeting mia lee is a beautifully melodic track that really moves you and strikes a resonant chord with your heart as the smooth and deep house vibes unfold. speaking of heart it features the heartbeat of hoshs unborn daughter. once again then, this is another richly rewarding ep from the one and only hosh.

born and raised by jamaican parents in london, england, alpheus developed a passion for singing after seeing an old recording of sam cooke perform on television, and performing on local sound systems in london as a youth. his love for ska rocksteady and reggae developed as he was exposed to singers like john holt, marcia griffiths, don carlos, dennis brown, frankie paul, michael gordon, keith douglas, thriller u, maxi priest, and many more great artists.

following a string of remixes throughout 2016, and one of her busiest summers on the road, cassy is rounding off the year on a high. enter ‘kwench records’, a collaborative imprint she has created to represent honest and upfront house music. the remit is simple, on each release two or more artists will collaborate on ep original material, with a different artist joining the package on remix duty. they must not be afraid to experiment, nor do what comes naturally to them. and above all, trust in themselves and their instincts. this is something cassy has proudly learned to master over her dj career, and she now wishes to put out records in a creative space that encourages this approach. for the first release, cassy has called in one of her favourite house music producers, canada based demuir, to collaborate with her. demuir’s ‘derrick does disco’ ep which came out on great lakes audio in 2016 was a favorite in cassy’s sets throughout that year, even making it onto her mixmag presents cd ‘let’s talk about donna’, which accompanied her cover in june. there are three original cuts on the package, and as a special treat for the first release, cassy is holding back the incredible remix package until later this year.

some might say jordan fields is one of the most criminally underappreciated figures to rise out of chicago in the late 90s, not for people who know what s what though. after a career spanning more than 20 years he has established himself as one of the key figures of the underground. coming out of where everything started, chicago, jordan released records on a handful of key labels like catalyst, track mode, som underground, mood groove, maffia. he did not stop there and today he is still releasing bangers having never lost that magic touch that has kept him firmly grounded on the purest form of the underground, and that, after more than 20 years is pretty much unheard of. when we first contacted jordan we wanted to go back to where it all started, we wanted to be transported to late 90s chicago, to a time where it was all about the dance floor, when tracks meant something more than songs, when purely club-oriented music was the purest form of the underground. to be honest we were not expecting to get exactly what we wanted straight away, he immediately sent us a collection of tools straight out of dat tapes he had, going all the way back to the 90s and early 2000s, so yeah to say that we are excited with this release would be a huge understatement. this is a collection of tools meant for the dancefloor, not reminiscent of some gone by era, these are the real deal, made by a true master, 20 years ago, for the future.

cheap present was formed in 2013 as a collaborative project between melbourne artists env and luis cl serving as an outlet for the pair to experiment outside of their main musical acts and subsequent genre limitations.
cheap present’s music is mostly recorded live in the studio with minimal overdubs and draws sounds and influences from various sources. using old keyboards and samples mixed with digital high definition sounds, the duo create a mixture of raw elements from the techno and dance tradition with a nod to classical melodies and industrial music. each song features heavy drums to highlight the melodic playfulness of their bass, synth arrangements and humorous but expressive vocals and song titles. the anterior mini lp follows on from the duo’s wet garden cassette earlier in the year and presents a collection of material looking back from the group’s creation in 2013 to more recent output. the pair’s evolution is clearly on display on the this 12 inch, from initial jam based songs such as waterproofyouth and bergwasser, which have a spontaneous metallic edge, to new songs such as rooftops, which display a more meticulous and mature approach to production.

route 8 back to his techno project q3a dropping some heavy grooving tracks! a year after his last release on delsin, the talented hungarian producer is back with four more cuts of techno and electro excellence, club tracks that ooze atmosphere and intriguing details. the nameless place kicks off with a tense and tangled techno track that is urgent and slick as is hurries on through damp underground caverns. the very end of you completely flips the script and is a slow motion bit of dub. with only sparse kick drums, the focus is on the cavernous pads that smear in huge arcs as watery droplets and heavenly chords add to the brain soothing effect. temple of retribution is back to techno, this time with loose, jumbled percussion and clipped drums cantering along at high speed. again it s roomy stuff with no real edge, the deva station drops into house mode, wriggling drums and distant vocal cries finished off with some classic detroit keys. it s a high tech, soulful track that closes out a diverse and devastating ep.

on 005 ken turns away from the light and invites you into the dark with adelaide’s furious frank, who dishes up a selection of psychedelic burners and formidable squelch. on this release frank pays tribute to the many mushroom picking spots in the surrounding hills of his hometown, and does them justice with an assortment of broken beats, affected drum flourishes and paranoid synths. over the course of the 5-tracker, frank presents sounds for the frayed final edges of a night out dancing, where shadows start to play tricks on the mind and each remaining track poses more questions than answers. none typify this nervous energy more so than a2 “dangerous dancer”, with it’s smoked out electro punctuated by a wailing 303 intended for dancers that may have gone too far, but are willing to take the next step.

repitch’s latest releases is a full-on acid assault, a distorted analog techno speedwagon driven by label co-founder d.carbone along with panzerkreuz affiliate and rave veteran albert van abbe. side a is composed of two tracks produced by van abbe and paul van ghent under the guise of his most unapologetic acid project penik etteck. recorded between 1998 and 2000, it is a duo of incendiary bangers made for no other purpose than pumping energy into the rave. on the flip side, van abbe’s youngest project datasmok sides with d.carbone for two more tracks ripe with acid basslines, heavily distorted drums, and noisy drones, speeding up the tempo on the first one and slowing it down on the second in order to explore the many dynamic possibilities of raving.

from the twilight zone of rhythm section international comes a new label for 2017: international black. this is the offshoot’s 3rd release this year and the machine shows no signs of slowing down. bradley zero’s ear for new talent continues to pay off as we are introduced to yet another young pair of producers, mallard & lt, going by the name of ‘j deep’. mallard, a 19 yo jazz student who made a big splash with his debut rs intl ep, ‘verte’, returns with a track aimed more squarely at the dancefloor. although hypnotic and ethereal, it packs a punch, with the arrangement and musicality belying mallard’s musical training at trinity college. on the flip side, mallard joins forces with another promising producer who goes by the name ‘lt’ in their collaborational partnership known as j.deep. complex jazz chords swim around 909’s to create an elevating techno roller that climbs and climbs only to give way to sparse rave stabs and ecstatic snare patterns. tried and tested for the best part of a year, these are 2 serious jams, proven to cause dancefloor frenzy.

“gateway to hyperspace ep” consists purely of original works from label head deepbass. taking a more euphonic approach the release delves into a more blissful sound with graceful seductive melodies but still with his distinctive rolling energetic touch.

next we have italian duo mattia & marco, aka dubfluss with this super 2 tracker, which also includes an outstanding remix by the master io mulen. big support from the likes of franco cinelli and more.

esteban adame and dj dex as el coyote returns with two smoking dancefloor tracks. dream dealer takes the los hermanos inspired hi tech latin soul template into edgier territory with a thumping kick drum and deep driving bassline. the e2e4 inspired chords and esteban s wicked solo half way through the track assure dream dealer will be a highlight in any club set. the flip side la frontera leans more to the moodier techno spectrum. the track slowly builds to a melodic hook, a percussive break and a requisite hands in the air moment.

“control” is the first release on jeff derringer’s new label, oktave records. the smartbar resident takes his chicago techno event to the next level with this new label offering. jeff supplies the sounds for this first record, which continues his impressive run of releases on esteemed labels such as soma, electric deluxe and perc trax. this time out, jeff delivers immediate dance floor action with the a-side, “control”, a driving, intense affair with jeff’s trademark heavy kick and mutating sub bass. on the flip, jeff introduces an ambient re-working of his 2010 track “tarantula”, as well as the blissed-out, dub laden affair “touch disease”. the record and the label represent a new depth of commitment to the oktave mission and sound, with upcoming releases to feature respected producers like iori, giorgio gigli and more. stay tuned for further developments from oktave records.

when it comes to living legends in the texas and latin music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than soul vocalist and mexican-american songwriter and bandleader sunny ozuna. he became a star right out of high school in the late ‘50s and hasn’t looked back in the six decades since.
among countless other honors and notable achievements, sunny was the first latino artist to appear on dick clark’s “american bandstand” (in 1963). songs like “put me in jail,” “talk to me,” “should i take you home,” “my dream” and “smile now, cry later” still bring crowds to their feet throughout the southwest and california and around the world at “oldies” and “lowrider soul” events. and after releasing dozens of albums since the mid-1960s (in spanish and english), sunny still keeps a busy schedule and loves performing as much as he did as a teenager. his classic 45s regularly change hands for hundreds of dollars among collectors around the world, affirming his timeless appeal.
this new compilation on brooklyn’s acclaimed big crown label is a lovingly curated selection of songs from the years 1966 to 1972. all compositions were originally released on sunny’s key-loc label, formed after his national star had been established, so he could have control of his own musical destiny. with sunny hits – a mix of originals and some great covers thrown in mr. brown eyed soul is an excellent celebration of sunny’s amazing body of work, and a perfect introduction for newcomers.
produced in full collaboration and cooperation with ozuna himself, the cd and lp packaging includes liner notes by texas music scholar and archivist ramon hernandez, and features dozens of rare photos provided by sunny himself.

this record is a collaborative between marq spekt and experimental, proto-new wave musician gary wilson (stones throw). it’s rare that you get the opportunity to work with the actual artist rather than just sampling his records. gary opened his vaults and provided sample soundscapes. some of these instrumentals date back to 1973 and may have been heard before. others may not. the ending result is a pure creative expression and meshes hip-hop, psychedelic, jazz and funk. soak up the vibrations and enjoy!
this is the kind of idea that makes you enjoy the fringes of rap more than what’s in the spotlight. with that said, “broken mazes” sounds weirder on paper than it does in the headphones. gary wilson is an awesomely strange dude with some outré music under his belt, but for this project spekt wisely sticks with the more accessible sides of wilson’s catalog. it’s all breezy jazz-funk with some vague psychedelic touches for extra oomph, a wide-open feld for spekt to run his free-flowing bars. the result is relaxed and enjoyable, if at times a bit unfocused – kinda like a good open-ended improv session by a talented jazz band.

for the 4th release from our beloved ourselves they ve once again invited a group of friends to serve us up a healthy dose of tasty house and disco. this time, originaltracks from luvless, snacks, siggatunez und jan ketel are on the menu. &#8203,,,, for starters we have luvless from leipzig whose prepared a floor stomper with a side of heavy drums paired with a warm chords- and stringsounds and a groovy bassline...completely love. the berlin duo snacks appear for the first time on ourselves with their track sisters . a delicious disco snack that sounds like an effortless kitchen jam with an extremely funky aftertaste - you re tastebuds will be dancing. hand played bass sprinkled over percussion, guitar licks and building up synths....hopefully you like your snacks authentic...they muste be true musicians...they are!! the one love disco & funk and the other jazz...so does siggatunez. he cuts us up a vibraphonline and sends it on the chase with a chord so delectably deep that not even the side of fat drums can keep up with the bounce and speed it creates but finally gets it and breaks down the club. jan ketel has prepared a desert that at first, tastes like a mere groovy tool but it soon opens up into something bigger and more hectic. it s like you gotta check in at charles de gaulle while in anothher moment the unmistakable flavour of a lush warm rhodes appears...a timeless flavour, and one that you ll never forget.
